Lake Biel: anchoring near St Peter’s Island and the Aare delta?

A trip to St Peter’s Island does not mean every stretch of its shore is open for anchoring. The island is a nature reserve. The Aare delta and other shallow shores of Lake Biel also include protected water areas.

Aerial imagery does not establish access

  • Before stopping, check protected boundaries, buoys and anchoring bans. Stay at least 25 m from reeds and aquatic plants. Keep scheduled-vessel landing stages and their approaches clear.
  • Scheduled vessels serve St Peter’s Island according to the seasonal timetable. Their public landing stage is therefore not a free mooring for private boats.

The Aare delta reserve changed in 2026

  • Bern merged Aaredelta Hagneck and Seestrand Lüscherz into the “Aaredelta am Bielersee” reserve. Use the current protection plan for a trip there rather than relying on old maps showing the two former names.
