Lake Walen: where is kitesurfing allowed?

Kitesurfing is generally allowed on Lake Walen, but several water areas are closed. In particular, open water off Weesen and Walenstadt does not necessarily mean an area is permitted.

Areas to avoid

  • Weesen bay between the Flibach mouth and Gäsi harbour is closed. Restrictions also apply around Gosten Ost and in the inner shore zone off Walenstadt, where a precisely defined launch and landing corridor exists.
  • Keep at least 150 m from scheduled-vessel landing stages. Keep public bathing areas and harbour entrances clear too. The cantonal kitesurfing map shows the boundaries.

Reaching the lake by motorboat via the Linth?

  • No permits are currently issued for travel between Obersee and Lake Walen to protect the lake from quagga mussels. The Linth authority extended the measure in early 2026. SUPs and unpowered inflatable boats are exempt from this decision.
