Lake Murten: boats, SUPs and the Broye canal

Lake Murten is generally open to motorboats and unpowered boats. The Broye canal connects it to Lake Neuchâtel and is also open to motorboats. The lake’s protected areas remain subject to their restrictions.

Lake and canal have different rules

  • The Broye canal speed limit is 15 km/h. This is not a speed limit for the whole of Lake Murten. Lower posted limits and the duty to avoid damaging wash still apply.

Chablais is not unrestricted shoreline

  • Chablais is subject to waterbird and migratory-bird reserve rules. Check the protection plan and buoys before landing, anchoring or taking a SUP trip. Having no engine does not exempt you from a general navigation ban.

Three lakes, one connected system

  • Bern’s reporting platform groups Lakes Murten, Neuchâtel and Biel with their connecting canals as one water section. Moves within that section do not need to be reported there as a change. Arrivals from other waters are subject to the relevant cantonal requirements.
